Dr. Wang received his Ph.D. degree in 1997 from the Institute of Biochemistry Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai, China. He started to work at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA with major research interest in experimental hematology in 1999 and moved back to Soochow University, Suzhou, China in 2010, where he served as a vice dean of Medical College. Dr. Wang is currently the director and professor of the Research Center for Blood Engineering and Manufacturing of Soochow University. He is also a principle investigator at Cyrus Tang Medical Institute of Soochow University and holds adjunct professorship at National Research Center for Hematological Diseases and National Key Laboratory for Radiation Medicine and Protection, Suzhou, China. His lab has been studying the cascades of aging-driven initiation of hematopoietic oncogenesis and autophagy-dependent intervention on hematopoietic aging progression, in particular with nonmedical endeavors based on traditional Chinese health practice such as short-term intensive fasting, known as beego. The ultimate goal of his study is to define and prevent the predisease for hematological malignancies initiated from the transformation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells in the bone marrow. His research also includes engineering and manufacturing of hematopoietic stem cells and functional blood cells with a longer storage lifespan but without allogeneic immune rejection for clinical use through in vitro modification of immune, aging and survival pathways in immortalized hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells and induced pluripotent stem cells.
