Research Experience and Accomplishments:

Prof. Yang focuses on the subjects of physical properties and catalytic chemical reactions on material surfaces. Using spatially resolved scanning probe microscopy and chemically resolved photoelectron spectroscopy as the main tools, he has systematically investigated the on-surface chemical reactions in the single molecular level, based on the prototypes system of organic molecules with specific functional groups adsorbed on the single crystal surfaces. 1) Pioneering research on the C-H bond activation on metal surfaces; surface controlled mono-/di-selective C-H bond activation; intermediate-directed chiral transfer from assembly to reaction. 2) Development of surface two-component condensation reaction. 3) Expand the substrates for on-surface chemical reactions: the surface preparation and physical properties of narrow-bandgap semiconductors.

Prof. Yang has published more than 20 journal papers, of which 13 papers have been published in world-class journals as the first author or corresponding author. Recipient of TUM University Foundation Fellowship and Humboldt Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. He intends to build a combined characterization system based on scanning probe microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, conduct research of on-surface chemical reactions methodology based on complex monomer molecules with dual (multi) functional groups, to develop surface synthesis methods for precise construction of new functional nanomaterials.
