Topic: Scalable manufacture of organic solar cells
Time: 10:30 AM, Oct. 9th (Sunday)
Location: Conference Room B, BLDG 909-1F
Abstract
Renewable clean energy is one of the most profound challenges faced by human society. Organic solar cells have been under rapid developments for past decades, owning to their low cost and short energy-pay-back-time due their solution processability. Until now, most of the high performance solar cells manufactured in lab uses spinning coating method. However, spin coating method is not scalable. And the power convert efficiency of those cell drops significantly once scaled up using roll-to-roll printing. The gap between lab scale and industrial scale manufacture yet to be filled. In this talk, I will present recent works in Prof. Zhenan Bao group aiming to close this gap. We used advanced real time X-ray diffraction techniques to understand the morphology development during the roll-to-roll printing process. Based on this morphology understanding, we further optimized an all polymer solar cell that can be scaled up from a lab scale spin coating to consciously roll-to-roll printing method using a custom built roll-to-roll coater without significant efficiency loss.
Biography
Dr. Xiaodan Gu currently is a post-doc researcher in Chemical Engineering department at Stanford University working with Prof. Zhenan Bao.
