Understanding the mechanisms of chemical reactions is a critical and complex challenge due to the dynamic nature of chemical reactions, often leading to controversy over the identification of key components, which has stimulated a growing need for in situ or operational characterization. Here, we utilize complementary manipulation techniques to trace material transformation during electrocatalytic reactions and sensing, in an effort to uncover their underlying mechanisms. We combined XRD and Raman spectroscopy to track the structural and compositional evolution of the three oxidized Cu precursors (i.e., Cu2(OH)2CO3, Cu(OH)2, and CuO) during the reaction, demonstrating that the excellent CO2 reduction performance of some derived Cu catalysts is attributed to small grain size and lattice strain, both of which are the result of in-situ electroreduction of precursors. In addition, using XRD and Raman spectroscopy, we identified AgI nanoparticles as active species for adsorption and desorption of iodine in the form of polyiodide, and when iodine species interact with reduced graphene oxide, they trap/release electrons from the adjacent graphene matrix, altering conductivity and generating a sensing signal. Our study highlights the importance of employing complementary operational characterization techniques to decipher the response mechanisms in various situations.

雷琼,澳门科技大学材料科学与工程系助理教授。2011年获得南开大学化学系学士学位。2016年获得南洋理工大学化学博士学位。随后加入沙特阿卜杜拉国王科技大学(KAUST)韩宇教授课题组从事博士后研究,2020年晋升为研究科学家。2022年加入香港理工大学(PolyU)应用物理系担任研究员(Research Talent)。雷琼博士课题组的研究方向主要包括电催化(如二氧化碳还原、氨合成等),原位表征,新型电解池的设计与应用。
