摘要
In the field of Organic Electronics, the molecular electrical doping of organic semiconductors (OSCs) has emerged as key strategy to improve the performance of organic (opto-)electronic devices and to extend their range of functionality. However, despite impressive success in practical applications, the fundamental processes underlying molecular electrical doping are still not fully understood to date, which precludes further progress.
In the present colloquium, I provide an overview on my work focusing, in general, on the microstructure of thin OSC films as assessed by X-ray diffraction techniques, and, in particular, on the interrelation between structure and electronic properties upon molecular electrical doping. In this context, I will discuss the role of ground-state charge transfer complex formation upon doping prototypical OSCs, where their mixed crystalline growth with the dopant species is observed. In the prospect of providing a unifying model for the molecular electrical doping of all types of organic semiconductors, that is, conjugated molecules and conjugated polymers, I pin down profound differences between the fundamental mechanisms at work in these two materials classes despite identical chemical composition and similar microstructure. Based on these insights emerge novel design rules for future, more efficient molecular dopants through targeted chemical design.
