报告摘要:

Modern opto-electronics technologies are built based on fundamental knowledge about electronic properties of semiconductor materials, which can be attained through accurate analyses made on single crystals of the materials as standard samples. In the cases of organic semiconductor materials, although technical difficulties have obstructed direct measurements of electronic properties in the organic semiconductor single crystals by photoelectron spectroscopy, we pioneered the experimental methodologies for accessing their electronic band dispersions, electron(hole)-phonon(vibration) coupling and defect-related ‘‘gap states’’ in both thin films and single crystals of the organic semiconductors. In this talk, I summarize our achievements in exploring the electronic structures of organic semiconductors. After a brief view of our research history, I discuss “band-gap states, the energy-band dispersion relations of holes, effects of electron(hole)-phonon(vibration) coupling obtained by the angle-resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (ARUPS) measurements, which allow one to deduce the effective mass of a quasi-particle, namely dressed charge, and impact of the gap state and electron(hole)–phonon(vibration) coupling to the band structure. I will also comment shortly on our know-how for adopting ARUPS to both thin film and single crystal samples, which are prone to be charged up and damaged upon photoelectron emission because they are good electrical insulators and very fragile by ionizing radiation.

个人简介 :

Professor UENO Nobuo finished the PhD course at the Department of Applied Physics, Graduate School of Tohoku University and received PhD in 1976, became an assistant professor of Chiba University in 1977, and studied ARUPS of organic thin films with synchrotron radiation at DESY-HASYLAB (1983–1984, with Humboldt Fellowship). Since 1996, he worked as a full professor at several departments of Chiba University, director of the Center for Frontier Science, and advisor to the president of Chiba University. He retired from Chiba University in 2014 and was designated distinguished professor and emeritus professor of Chiba University. He has been a chair professor at Soochow University (China) since 2013. He was appointed the director of the Academic Liaison Office of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in London (JSPS London) for 2016 – 2021. He has been the academic research advisor at Chiba University since 2021.

He is a pioneer in observing intermolecular band dispersion, electron-phonon coupling, and band-gap states of organic semiconductors with UPS. His research also used other electron spectroscopy methods with metastable-atom impact, which can selectively excite electrons tailing outside the organic surface, and low-energy electron impact.
