Topic:Functionalized silicon: from surface modification and toxicity studies to romantic surfaces

Time:9:30AM, Dec. 2nd ( Monday )

Location909-B

Abstact:

With the miniaturization of technology, control over surface properties becomes more and more important. This ranges from medical diagnostics via functional quantum dots to surfaces that are optimized to display some specifically chosen property. One of the most powerful toolboxes in obtaining that control is the combination of inorganic and organic chemistry. This means: producing well-controlled inorganic surfaces, both flat and e.g. as nanoparticles, and reacting them with high efficiency with both ‘old’ and novel organic reactions to obtain the functionalized surfaces. The presentation will focus on ways to functionalize flat and nanoparticle surfaces, briefly discusses how this effects the desired means, and finishes with showing the potential to create truly romantic surface.

Biography:

Han Zuilhof is the Chair of Organic Chemistry at Wageningen University (Wageningen, The Netherlands), Perennial Distinguished Guest Professor of Molecular Science at Tianjin University (Tianjin, China) and Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Materials Chemistry at the King Abdulaziz University (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia). He is a Senior Editor of Langmuir, an Editorial Advisory Board member of Advanced Materials Interfaces, Applied Surface Science, and Cell Reports Physical Science, and co-founder of Surfix B.V. His interests focus on surface-bound organic chemistry and the accompanying analytical chemistry to properly characterize that, and on novel organic reactions and supramolecular materials.
