报告摘要:
For the practical applications of plasmonic devices and metasurface-based optical structures, it is desirable to develop alternative, high-performance plasmonic materials, in replacement of commonly used noble metals such as gold (Au) and silver (Ag). Ideally, plasmonic materials should have the properties of low loss, sustainability, stability, biocompatibility, tunability, as well as integrability with present semiconductor technologies. Recently, we have developed epitaxial growth techniques for forming atomically smooth, single-crystalline aluminum (Al) and titanium nitride films on sapphire and silicon substrates using molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). In comparison to Ag, Al-based plasmonic structures are chemically stable and exhibit an excellent spectral response in the ultraviolet (UV) region, making Al-based SERS substrates particular suitable for UV surface-enhanced surface Raman spectroscopy (UV-SERS) and plasmonic metasurface-based linear and nonlinear optics. In this talk, I will present recent experimental results of Al-SERS substrates. In comparison to Ag counterparts using the same top-down nanofabricated SERS substrate design and two-dimensional (atomically thin monolayer) semiconductor analyte, Al-SERS outperforms Ag-SERS in the UV (325 nm) region and shows a surprising strong (comparable or even better than Ag) SERS signal in the visible (532 nm) region, resulting from the excellent properties of native alumina layer formed on the Al substrate.
