Abstract:

Over the past 30 years, the development of photonic devices based on organic semiconductors has made remarkable progress. Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) now dominate the high-end display market, and organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) are poised to become a transformational energy generation technology with state-of-the-art power conversion efficiencies >15% and intrinsic advantages over existing solar technologies, namely flexibility, inexpensive low-temperature fabrication, and the potential to be made transparent or semi-transparent for integration into windows. Perhaps the greatest challenge remaining for OPVs is their operational stability, which can be intrinsically limited by photodegradation of the constituent molecules and morphological changes within the cell during operation. This talk will discuss the strategies and design principles used to develop the most stable OPVs reported to-date based on tetraphenyldibenzoperiflanthene:C70, and how accelerated aging with high temperatures and high intensity illumination can be used to elucidate intrinsic degradation mechanisms and dramatically reduce the time required for reliability measurements.
