报告摘要:

Telecommunications network models have been developed and studied for over a century. They have been applied to planning and design of a wide range of telecommunication systems and networks. The general aim has been to minimize cost subject to meeting quality of service and reliability requirements. This talk will address three distinct networking research topics. The first is how to design a multilayer network model that considers many practical aspects, including: realistically sized networks, layered architecture, and stochastic traffic composed of heavy tailed flows. We aim to provide validated solutions for optimal traffic engineering, network design and evolution prediction. The second is on how to optimize a topology of cabled networks considering path planning of optical fiber cables and trading off cost savings and network resilience. This research was motivated by the 2006 Hengchun earthquake near the south coast of Taiwan that caused disruption to Internet services in many Asian countries. This disruption was caused as a result of damage to several undersea cables located close to each other in an earthquake prone area. The aim is to optimize the laying path of cables considering a range of factors including: cost, risk, geography, and ecology. Since there are multiple stakeholders with different objectives, a multi-objective optimization is used. The third is on design and dimensioning of mobile networks with special focus on reduction of energy consumption. This is a collaborative work with SmarTone Mobile Communications Ltd, a leading mobile network operator in Hong Kong. The project’s aim is to develop software tools that will provide mobile network operators with means to optimize their network design in the way that reduces network operational cost, saves energy consumption and, in turn, lowers cost to customers. This project will gain useful insights for developing the future energy-efficient 5G mobile network.
