Suzhou Gardens study

2012.5.20 ~6.04, the Architecture School of Soochow University and Architectural Science department of Ryerson University had a 16 days co-teaching studio.
Ryerson is Canada's leader in innovative, career-focused education and a university clearly on the move. Ryerson’s Department of Architectural Science is dedicated to the pursuit of integrated, sustainable approaches to the design and development of the built environment. The Department offers a pre-professional Bachelor of Architectural Science degree, with options in Architecture, Building Science, and Project Management, the goal of which is to educate students for a wide range of professional roles in the construction industry.

In the 16-day studio class, the students from the two universities were divided into 6 groups, they studied together, did research together and finished their final presentations together.
This is a class focusing on the study of the gardens of Suzhou. The students visited the gardens in class, such as: Master of the Nets Garden, Humble Administrator's Garden, Lingering Garden, and Garden of the Peaceful Mind, as well as other lesser-known but equally significant gardens in the Suzhou region. They studied the elements of the gardens and the way how they work together: rocks, trees, and walls are pushed into the foreground to compress and compact space, as if great hands had gathered a mountainous territory of rocky cliffs, forests, and streams, then squeezed it tightly until the entire region would fit into a small city garden.
The students did wonderful works at the end of the 16-day class, the Canadian students and Chinese students both learned a lot from each other, they tried to see and understand things from a different view, which is a very valuable thing for studying and teaching as well.
This co-teaching will be a yearly running program in our school, we are expecting to explore more together in the future.
