2022 Soochow University Application Guide for Master Program

 

University profile 

l  China's first Western-style educational university 

- Founded in 1900 by American missionaries, it is one of the earliest universities in China. 

l  A key comprehensive university in China 

- Ranked among the top 30 universities in China, the university was among the first batch to be selected as one of the '2011 Plan' and 'Double First-class' universities by Ministry of Education. 

l  A key research university in China 

- Ranked among the top 20 of National Natural Science Research Foundation, the top 30 of National Social Science Research Foundation. 

l  A university that deeply promotes its internationalization strategy 

- Developing cooperation and exchanges with over 200 universities in more than 30 countries. 

The length of master program is generally 2 or 3 years. Graduates who use English as the language of instruction should reach Chinese Language Proficiency Scales / HSK Level 3 or above.

 

I. Application requirements 

1. Non-Chinese citizens who are in good health and holding valid ordinary foreign passports.

2. Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

III. Application process 

1. Login to Soochow University International Student Service System at https://suda.17gz.org or https://iaa.suda.edu.cn and fill in the required information (choose ‘self-sponsored’): 

(1) The applicant shall ensure that all information is accurate. 

(2) Applicants should keep the phone open and check the online registration system and E-mail regularly. University will contact the applicants based on actual needs. 

2. Upload and submit the following application materials in the system:

(1) Information page of valid passport, all visas to China or residence permit pages (if any).

(2) Bachelor’s degree certificate and transcripts. If the applicant is a current student, he/she should submit a pre-graduation certificate issued by the school he/she attended.

(The above proof shall be affixed with official seal. If the original is in a language other than Chinese or English, notarized copies in Chinese or English shall be attached.)

(3) Language Proficiency Certificate: 

- To apply for majors taught in Chinese, applicants should meet the Chinese level of HSK 5 scoring 180 and above.

- To apply for programs taught in English, applicants must meet at least one of the English proficiency requirements: TOEFL score 80 / IELTS 6.0 / Native English speaker / English as the medium of instruction for undergraduate program / other evidence of equivalent English proficiency recognized by Soochow University.

(4) Two recommendation letters from associate professors or professors. 

(5) Study plan.

(6) Health certificate within 6 months. Download the Foreigner Physical Examination Form and go to a regular local hospital to complete the examination. The medical examination form should be filled out in Chinese or English and affixed with the hospital’s official seal on the photo.

(7) No criminal record certificate.

(8) Other supporting documents (award certificate, paper publication, participation certificate in international conference or volunteer activity, etc.)

V. Review and Admission

Applicants shall be required to provide supplementary materials or be assessed by written test or interview. Admission results will come out through the online application system in late June. Unsuccessful applicants will not be notified.

2. Application fee: 650 RMB 

3. Accommodation fee: 800-900 RMB/person/month (double-shared room) 

Note: 1) Due to the shortage of dormitory resources, campus accommodation will be arranged according to the actual situation.

2) All students are required to purchase their own textbooks and pay for laboratory and equipment fees according to the requirements of each school (department).

 

VII. Scholarship

1. Chinese Government Scholarship (applicants must be under 35 years of age)  

Type A:

The applicant should apply through particular departments of the host country. (The specific acceptance time is subject to the notification time of each dispatch department, usually from early January to early April)

 

Type B:

Soochow University has several Chinese government scholarship programs, available for master applicants in TCSOL, international business, textile engineering, textile materials and textile design, materials science and engineering, biology, physics, new energy materials and engineering, and other disciplines.

Chinese government scholarship criteria: tuition, accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance and monthly living allowance. Scholarship students must attend and pass the annual review in May of the following year in order to be awarded with scholarship for the next year.

 

Application process: 

Please apply through Chinese Government Scholarship Information System (https://www.campuschina.org/). Select 'Type B' when applying, and the agency number of Soochow University is 10285.

* Students who apply for Chinese Government scholarship should also login to Soochow University International Student Service System at https://suda.17gz.org or https://iaa.suda.edu.cn and fill in the required information.

2. University Scholarship (applicants must be under 35 years of age)   

Soochow University scholarship grants only to master and doctoral students. Scholarship students must attend and pass the annual review in May of the following year in order to be awarded with scholarship for the next year.

(1) Full scholarship 

Criteria: tuition, on-campus accommodation and comprehensive medical insurance. The standard of living allowance in China is the same as that of Chinese government scholarship. 

(2) Partial scholarship 

Criteria: tuition, on-campus accommodation and comprehensive medical insurance.

Application process: 

Applicants should login to Soochow University International Student Service System at https://suda.17gz.org or https://iaa.suda.edu.cn, select ‘University Scholarship’, fill in and upload relevant materials according to the requirements. 

Applicants shall be required to provide supplementary materials or be assessed by written test or interview. Admission results will come out through the online application system in late June. Unsuccessful applicants will not be notified.
