2022 Soochow University Application Guide for Undergraduate Program


University profile 

l  China's first Western-style educational university 

- Founded in 1900 by American missionaries, it is one of the earliest universities in China.

The length of undergraduate program is generally 4 years (6 years for MBBS). Graduates who use Chinese as the language of instruction should reach Chinese Language Proficiency Scales / HSK Level 5 or above. Graduates who use English as the language of instruction should reach Chinese Language Proficiency Scales / HSK Level 4 or above.

 

I. Application requirements 

1. Non-Chinese citizens who are in good health and holding valid ordinary foreign passports, and applicants under the age of 18 are required to provide guardianship certificates. 

2. High school graduate or equivalent. 

* According to Article 12 [2020] from Ministry of Education,  if one or both of the parents are Chinese citizens and live abroad, the child will have foreign nationality at birth, rather than Chinese nationality. or emigrated from China. As a foreign student applicant, shall hold a valid foreign passport or nationality certificate for 4 years or more, and records for living abroad for 2 years or more from April 30, 2018 to April 30, 2022 (the practical residence abroad for 9 months in a year can be considered as one year, subject to entry and exit stamps).

* Residents from the mainland of China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan who apply to study as foreign students at Soochow University after immigrating and acquiring foreign nationality should comply with the above regulations.

III. Application process 

1. Login to Soochow University International Student Service System at https://suda.17gz.org or https://iaa.suda.edu.cn and fill in the required information (choose ‘self-sponsored’): 

(1) The applicant shall ensure that all information is accurate. 

(2) Applicants should keep the phone open and check the online registration system and E-mail regularly. University will contact the applicants based on actual needs. 

2. Upload and submit the following application materials in the system: 

(1) Information page of valid passport, all visas to China or residence permit pages (if any).

(2) High school graduation certificate and school transcripts. If the applicant is a current student, he/she should submit a pre-graduation certificate issued by the school he/she attended.

(The above proof shall be affixed with official seal. If the original is in a language other than Chinese or English, notarized copies in Chinese or English shall be attached.) 

(3) Language Proficiency Certificate: 

- To apply for majors taught in Chinese, applicants should meet the Chinese level of HSK 4 scoring 180 and above.

- To apply for programs taught in English, applicants must meet at least one of the English proficiency requirements: TOEFL score 80 / IELTS 6.0 / Native English speaker/English as the medium of instruction in high school/other evidence of equivalent English proficiency recognized by Soochow University. 

(4) Health certificate within 6 months. Download the Foreigner Physical Examination Form and go to a regular local hospital to complete the examination. The medical examination form should be filled out in Chinese or English and affixed with the hospital’s official seal on the photo.

(5) No criminal record certificate. 

(6) Other supporting documents (personal introduction, award certificate, recommendation letter, etc). 

 

IV. Programs

All undergraduate programs at Soochow University are open to international students (except the MBBS program, which is taught in English, the other programs are taught in Chinese). Popular majors:

- Chinese Language and Literature (separate class for international students)

- International Economics and Trade (separate class for international students)

- Clinical Medicine (MBBS, six-year program, separate class for international students, English-taught)

 

V. Review and Admission

Applicants shall be required to provide supplementary materials or be assessed by written test or interview. Admission results will come out through the online application system in early June. Unsuccessful applicants will not be notified.

3. Accommodation fee: 800-900 RMB/person/month (double-shared room) 

Note: 1) Due to the shortage of dormitory resources, campus accommodation will be arranged according to the actual situation.

2) All students are required to purchase their own textbooks and pay for laboratory and equipment fees according to the requirements of each school (department). 

 

VII. Scholarship

Chinese Government Scholarship (applicants must be under 25 years of age) 

Type A:

The applicant should apply through particular departments of the host country. (The specific acceptance time is subject to the notification time of each dispatch department, usually from early January to early April)
